Newspaper In Education
Newspaper In Education programs began in the 1930s at the request of social
studies teachers. Today, there are over 900 participating newspapers in the United
States, and NIE programs in 51 other countries around the world.
The Mount Vernon News’ NIE program was established to provide an educational
service arm for the newspaper.
NIE’s goal is to assist schools, teachers and parents in developing
future readers who can use the newspaper to enrich their own lives and participate
responsibly in their community, state and nation.
As the world continues to change dramatically, the NIE program aims to provide
students with a lively and vital educational link to the newspaper, their community,
the world and the future.
Sponsor donations provide a number of educational services each year to help educators
teach from the Mount Vernon News, including free newspapers, educational sections,
special programs and curriculum resources.
Area individuals and businesses are invited to sponsor NIE programs at any
donation level.
Over 70,000 newspapers are delivered to Knox County schools during the school
year. Newspapers are supplied at no cost to the schools through donations from
business sponsors in the community.
