Mount Vernon picks up win

MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon High School boys volleyball team dominated its home opener on Tuesday night. The Yellow Jackets beat Olentangy Liberty in three games, 25-16, 25-12, 25-6, at Mount Vernon Middle School.

“We showed some competitiveness and aggressiveness, and that’s what we like to see,” said Mount Vernon head coach Alan Cassell. “Our serving was really strong. I liked the improvement our passing showed over last weekend.”

The win was the first match of conference play for Mount Vernon. The Jackets are now 2-2 overall.

“We come together and play together really well,” said Sam Bennett. “We don’t just go to one person, we give the ball to everyone.”

Carter Cassell had 12 assists, five kills and four aces for the Yellow Jackets. Kurt Holland had 10 assists, six aces and five kills. Bennett was able to make five blocks, while getting five kills and three aces. Greg Brenneman had six kills.

“In the beginning of the year we were not passing very well,” said Brenneman. “We worked on that in practice, now everyone is talking, and we are playing as a team now.”

Mount Vernon’s junior varsity team also picked up a win. The Jackets won in two games, with scores of 25-16 and 25-22.

“Our goal is to win the conference, and I told the guys that it starts right now,” said coach Cassell. “A lot of people think this is the year to come after us, because we lost a couple of good players from last year. But I told them I don’t think they can.”

The Jackets go on the road Tuesday to play Pickerington Central. The next home game for the Jackets will be held at Mount Vernon High School against defending state champs, Cincinnati Moeller, on April 12. The freshman game will start at noon, with junior varsity and varsity playing immediately after.
