MOUNT VERNON — “The Hive” was packed for Senior Night on Tuesday night, and the Mount Vernon High School boys volleyball team didn’t disappoint. Facing Delaware Hayes in the final Ohio Capital Conference match of the season, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Pacers in three games, 25-10, 25-9 and 25-13. With the win, the Yellow Jackets finish undefeated in the OCC with a 10-0 record. The squad is 11-6 overall.
“We just wanted to take care of our conference games, and play a hard schedule away from the conference,” said Mount Vernon head coach Alan Cassell. “So far we have accomplished that. We have a good group of seniors and we got them some recognition tonight.”
The Jackets had an easy time with the Pacers, who couldn’t challenge the Jackets’ size and skill. Carter Cassell led the Jackets with 17 assists, four kills and one block; and Ben Bennett added three blocks and two kills.
Four seniors participated in this year’s senior day: Kurt Holland, Sam Bennett, Greg Brenneman and Ben Cichanowicz. Bennett had 10 kills and two blocks for the Jackets, while Holland had six assists and six kills. Brenneman had seven kills and one block, and Cichanowicz contributed three kills.
“We did better than expected throughout our season, and I hope we continue it,” said Holland. “We had a lot of fun out there so that was the best part. We have won the conference before, but I don’t think we’ve ever gone undefeated.”
The next game for Mount Vernon will be on Thursday, as the Jackets go on the road to play Gahanna-Lincoln. The team will be back in Mount Vernon for a tri-match on Saturday, against Cleveland St. Ignatius and Columbus St. Charles. The match will start at 10 a.m.
