DUBLIN — After five events scored, the Mount Vernon High School boys track team is winning the Division I Central District 2 track meet with a total of 27 points. Thanks to 20 points from Lucas Ferguson, five points from Harley Filyaw and two points from Chris Estep, the Yellow Jackets are sitting in a great position for tonight’s track preliminary races.

The Jackets lead the early 17-team competition at Dublin Coffman High School by two points over Olentangy Liberty. Hilliard Darby is third with 17.5 points, DeSales sits in fourth (17.33 points) and Tri-Valley is fifth (15 points).

Ferguson added yet another mark to his long list of great athletic achievements on Tuesday. The junior standout attracted a crowd of onlookers in both the discus throw and the shot put.

Ferguson first defeated the field by over 20 feet in the disc as he won the district meet for the second year in a row. His toss of 175 feet was one of his best ever. Then, only minutes later, he won the district shot put with a toss of 53-9 1/2.

“Last year I was third in shot, and this year I was first, so that was as step up,” said Ferguson. “I usually don’t throw against people, just my best other throws. As long as I do my best, I’m good.”

Estep finished in seventh place in the high jump, clearing 6-0. He was just two inches behind the overall winner, Cole Lapp of Tri-Valley.

Filyaw found success in the boys long jump. He leaped a distance of 20-11 3/4, which was good enough for fourth place overall and his personal best.

“Harley gets excited, but I think that benefits him,” said Mount Vernon head track coach Jim Lindsey. “When he makes a mistake he picks up on it easily. He has 21 feet something in him, I think he will get it real soon.”

The Jackets will be back on the track tonight for preliminary races, then on Saturday will contest the track finals.
