MV boys basketball holding pig roast

MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon High School football fans have an opportunity to support both the basketball program and the community on Friday night at the fourth annual pig roast. The donation-only roast will be held outside of Yellow Jacket Stadium, beginning at 5 p.m. and running until kickoff.

The menu includes a pork sandwich, baked beans, potato salad, dessert and a drink. The event is put on by the Mount Vernon boys basketball program.

“We have a lot of good kids and they understand the role they play in the community. There is life outside of basketball, and this helps them realize that,” said Mount Vernon boys basketball coach Kurt Kaufman. “Our kids play a big role, from setup to help serve and teardown. We do this because we want them to be involved in the community. We also do this to show our appreciation for the support the community gives us.”

All proceeds, as in years past, will go to benefit the Knox County Job & Family Services Books & Bears Program.

“We raised over $2,000 last year, and we have raised nearly $5,000 total the last three years,” said Kaufman. “It goes for a broad spectrum of things. We don’t tag it for any one thing. It all goes to the kids in the program, and that’s the main thing.”
