Game of the Week: Freddies tackle Scots, 7-6 - VIDEO SPARTA -- Despite a significant time of possession advantage in the second half, the Highland High School football team couldn't punch the ball in the end zone or through the uprights. The Scots fell to the Fredericktown Freddies in the 2008 high school season opener at Highland High School.Danville 56, Fisher Catholic 9 LANCASTER -- Danville proved itself fully ready for the start of the 2008 football season on Saturday, easily handling Fisher Catholic, 56-9.Lexington schools Yellow Jackets LEXINGTON -- School officially started on Friday for the Mount Vernon High School football team, and the Lexington Minutemen gave them an early lesson on championship-caliber football.Redskins get the ball moving UTICA -- The Utica High School football team came out firing on all cylinders Friday night in its victory over Grandview Heights. The Redskins had five touchdowns from five different players on route to a 35-21 victory. Utica (1-0) ended an eight-year drought in home openers with the victory, their first since the 2000 season.Pirates hand Bulldogs opening loss CARDINGTON -- Cardington was rock steady through four quarters of its season-opening game against East Knox on Friday, scoring touchdowns in each of the game's four quarters in beating the Bulldogs, 27-7.Mount Vernon freshman start 2008 season - VIDEO The Mount Vernon Freshman Yellow Jackets played hard for four quarters but fell to Lexington in the last minute of the game, 22-26. MVHS varsity travels to Lexington tonight with a 7 p.m. kickoff. The junior varsity team hosts Lexington Saturday at 10 a.m.Scots, Freddies kick off season SPARTA -- The revamped Fredericktown Freddies will begin a new era as they roll into Sparta on Friday to renew their interconference rivalry with the equally retooled Highland Scots.
Jackets come up short in defeat - VIDEO MOUNT VERNON -- Yellow Jacket Stadium proved to be just another field for the Mount Vernon High School football team on Friday night. Playing on their home field for the first time this season, the Yellow Jackets couldn't muster any magic as they fell to the Wooster Generals, 28-14.Trojans fall to Newark Catholic CENTERBURG -- The Centerburg Trojans ran into a perennial powerhouse Friday night when they met Newark Catholic on their home field. Newark Catholic (2-0) ran over the Trojans, gaining 271 yards on the ground, including three touchdowns. Centerburg (1-1) fought hard, but mistakes came back to haunt them, and they dropped the game, 26-0.Highland thrashes River Valley SPARTA -- After a disappointing opening loss to Fredericktown a week ago, the Highland High School football team rebounded Friday night with a convincing 48-0 thrashing of guest River Valley.Vikings'game gets suspended JOHNSTOWN -- Lightning illuminated the sky Friday night, giving the Vikings a halftime break that won't end until this evening. Currently down, 7-0, the Northridge High School football team will get a chance to watch the Ohio State Buckeyes'season opener before taking the field again tonight at 6.Night ends with Colts'loss BELLVILLE -- The Clear Fork Colts played tough, but 122 yards by Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary's running back Harvey Tuck proved to be too much as the visiting Irish beat the ailing Colts, 20-7.Danville coach placed on administrative leave MOUNT VERNON -- Only one week into the high school football season and the Danville Blue Devils are already undergoing a couple of major changes. First, quarterback Marcus Magers broke his arm in the season opener. Danville (2-1) rushed for 252 yards and held Dalton to 119 total yards of offense on the way to the Blue Devils'second victory.Fredericktown "Ruhls"Eagles, 38-7 FREDERICKTOWN -- After three weeks of nonleague play, the Fredericktown Freddies are ready to take on the Mid-Buckeye Conference. Blue Devils cruise past Trojans - VIDEO CENTERBURG -- Coming off a big conference loss last week, the Danville Blue Devils needed a win this week to keep their Mid-Buckeye Conference title hopes alive. They got just that when they traveled to Trojan Stadium to take on Centerburg (1-5, 0-3). Devil-Dog game belongs to Danville - VIDEO The Danville football team did all it could do to keep it's playoff hopes alive on Saturday night. The Blue Devils needed a win versus it's biggest rival the East Knox Bulldogs, and it got just that.
