WOOSTER — Mount Vernon held leads of 8-0 and 15-10 on Friday night, only to have host Wooster score a touchdown in the final minutes of the game to edge the Yellow Jackets, 16-15.
Leevi Stump ran six times for 123 yards for Mount Vernon (0-2), and he scored the team’s fourth-quarter touchdown. Overall, the Jackets had 245 total yards to 342 for the Generals. Kody Green completed 7-of-19 passes for 104 yards.
In the first quarter, the Jackets defense had Wooster backed up to its own end zone, when a snap flew through the hands of Generals’ signal caller Bryan Gallo-Malta and through the end zone for a safety. That score, with 9:09 to play in the first quarter, was the only one of the half, as Mount Vernon went to the break up 2-0.
Most of the third quarter went by before the Jackets added to their lead. Ethan Grant caught a 9-yard TD pass from Green with 2:41 left, but the kick was blocked to leave Mount Vernon ahead, 8-0. Wooster used its final drive of the quarter to get down to the Jacket 29, but stalled and settled for a 36-yard field goal to cut the lead to 8-3.
The Generals finally got the big break it needed with 9:10 to play in the fourth quarter. Gallo-Malta and Duke Price combined for an 82-yard touchdown pass, which got the crowd back into the game as well as the team, which now led 10-8. Mount Vernon came back with a score in the next two minutes, as Stump rumbled 16 yards for a touchdown which took back the lead for the Jackets, 15-10. The Generals then came back as quickly as Mount Vernon had, and scored on Jon Graves’ 9-yard run at the 5:10 mark.
Ethan Abell led Jacket receivers with two catches for 49 yards.
