Columbus Academy 61, Centerburg 15

COLUMBUS — Columbus Academy literally ran up the score on Centerburg on Friday night, scoring eight times on the ground in a 61-15 walloping of the Trojans.

The Vikings (2-1) scored twice in the first quarter, on an 18-yard run by Austin Peterman and a 25-yarder by Jeff May, to lead 15-0. The second quarter was the real undoing of Centerburg (0-3), as Academy scored four times to lead 41-0 at halftime. Preston Pearson scored on a 20-yard run early in the period, and R.J. Watters broke off a 10-yard scoring run for a 28-0 lead. Peterman scored again, this time on a 12-yard run, for a 34-0 advantage, and Zach Ratcliff caught a 10-yard pass from Josh Hill to leave the Trojans behind, 41-0.

Pearson and Watters each scored another touchdown in the third quarter, from 60 and 3 yards, respectively, to put the Vikings up 55-0. Centerburg finally found the end zone later in the quarter, as Drew Osborne hit T.T. Thompson with a 44-yard TD pass. The Trojans made it 55-15 with Logan McGovern’s 1-yard run, but Academy scored once more later in the period.

The Vikings ran 40 times of 397 yards in the game.

Grove City Christian 24, Danville 14

GROVE CITY — Grove City Chrisian scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to overtake Danville for a 24-14 nonconference victory on Friday.

The Blue Devils had 186 total yards to 304 yards for the Jaguars, but held GCC to 48 yards passing.

Danville claimed the early lead with Heath Buckingham’s 1-yard TD run in the first quarter. The Blue Devils held the lead through Gabe Guttierez’s second-quarter 36-yard field goal for GCC, but the Jaguars’ Christopher Bowman completed a 17-yard scoring pass to Brice Bowman to give them a 10-7 lead at the break.

Buckingham broke into the end zone again in the third quarter, once again from 1 yard out, and Danville regained the lead, 14-10. But GCC’s running game proved to be too much. Luke Smurthwaite gave the Jaguars the lead for good with a 3-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. The Blue Devils had the ball at midfield with 3:56 left in the game, but fumbled on fourth down, handing the ball to GCC. Just two plays later, the Jaguars’ Jesse Barns then sealed the victory with a 50-yard touchdown run.

Buckingham ran 17 times for a team-high 70 yards for Danville.
