  • MV wraps up quick win over CF

  • April 9, 2010

MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon baseball team is not one for messing around. With the wind blowing hard and the temperatures falling Thursday, the Yellow Jackets wasted no time in disposing of visiting Clear Fork in the completion of a game originally played March 29.

The Jackets gave up a run in the top half of the 10th inning, but then exploded for three straight hits in the bottom half of the inning to pull out a 6-5 victory over the Colts.

“It was nice to bounce back after giving them five outs (in the top of the inning),” said Mount Vernon coach Doug Savage. “We’re having fun and playing with a lot of confidence. The guys know a lot of the guys on Clear Fork’s team, so they’re pretty excited about getting the win.”

The game had been called with the score tied at 4 after nine innings of play on March 29. Thursday, they picked up in the top of the 10th on another cold and windy day.

Clear Fork (5-1) was able to take advantage of two miscues by Jacket shortstop Kolton Wilson. Following a flyout, Clear Fork’s Eric Kline hit a hard grounder up the middle that Wilson misplayed. Kline then stole second and scored when Kolton made an errant throw on a ground ball by Logan Perkins. But, MV catcher Willie Gallagher stepped up and stopped the bleeding when he threw Perkins out trying to steal second.

Mount Vernon (6-0) wasted no time in the bottom half of the 10th. Alec Curry led off with a single as he beat out a slow roller toward shortstop. Gallagher then came through with his second big play of the night, smacking a line-drive triple past the diving attempt of Clear Fork left fielder Jake Dickerson. That triple scored Curry and knotted the game at 5.

“Willie really put a charge into it. It was on the inner half of the plate — his favorite spot, and he turned on it. He’s got some pop,” Savage said.

Kody Green then ended the game in a hurry, smacking a single through the hole between first and second to plate Gallagher with the winning run.

“Kody’s was an instant replay of his one that ended the game last night (a 13-3 win over Delaware). He hit in the opposite way,” Savage said.

Shawn Maxwell pitched the final inning for the Jackets, getting two pop outs and giving up the unearned run.

“I thought Shawn Maxwell did a heckuva job. He came in in a tight situation and threw strikes. He made them hit the ball,” Savage said.

The Jackets will return to action tonight, hosting Franklin Heights in an Ohio Capital Conference matchup beginning at 5 p.m.
