  • Eagles too much for MV boys

  • May 5, 2010

MOUNT VERNON — Even before they stepped onto the court Tuesday afternoon, the Mount Vernon High School boys tennis players knew they had a tough task ahead of them. The Yellow Jackets hosted the 15-2 New Albany Eagles in Ohio Capital Conference Capital Division play at Memorial Park.

The Eagles swept the Jackets, 5-0, to stay undefeated in league play. Despite the loss, Mount Vernon coach Jeff Jarosz saw some bright spots.

“We always think we can win, especially second and third singles with Alex [Shillito] and Avery [Baldwin] being as effective as they’ve been this year,” said Jarosz. “I didn’t put us down for an automatic loss. I thought we had a legitimate shot, and Avery almost did.”

Mount Vernon senior John Fleming put up a fight at first singles, but New Albany’s Riyad Bennoui was too strong. Bennoui posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Shillito also had a tough challenge, taking on Sean Yun. Yun swept Shillito, 6-0, 6-0.
