  • MV shot down by Blue Aces

MOUNT VERNON — Heading into tournament play next week, the Mount Vernon softball team was looking to find its stride Thursday. Instead, it ran into a buzzsaw by the name of Granville pitcher Courtney Moyer.

Moyer allowed just two hits and struck out 11 Yellow Jacket batters in a 4-0 victory for the Blue Aces.

“We’re very disappointed. You have to adjust to the pitcher and we didn’t,” said Mount Vernon assistant coach Lynn Apple. “We were off-balance and just watched the pitches go by. We struck out more than we have in quite a while. These girls have been playing the game long enough. We need to adjust to the pitcher and we didn’t do that tonight.”

Moyer kept the Jackets (16-5) off-balance with a wide assortment of pitches, but it was her high fastball that befuddled them. Out of the 11 strikeouts, five were caught looking at the third strike. Even when they were able to figure out Moyer, they didn’t make good contact, getting just one ball out of the infield other than Kylee Marcum’s two hits.
