  • Turkey season going strong

  • May 8, 2010

MOUNT VERNON — The spring turkey season has been underway for over two weeks, and preliminary numbers show it is off to a good start. As of Monday, 367 turkeys have been checked in Knox County. Statewide, 11,152 turkeys were bagged in the first week alone.

The early numbers are ahead of the pace of the 2009 spring turkey season, and that was before the all-day hunting season opened on Monday. The season runs through May 16.

“Last year for the whole season, we were at 472 killed,” said Knox County Wildlife Officer Mike Miller. “We were already at 367 with more than two weeks left. I think with the full day of hunting that we are in now, we will have an increase. I expect to break 500 this year. You can never be sure, but we still have a lot of time left.”
