MOUNT VERNON — Tuesday proved to be a mixed bag for many area athletes competing at the District Track and Field Meets in central Ohio.
For the Mount Vernon girls at the Division I meet at Dublin Coffman High School, only one advanced to the regional competition — senior Brittany Shelhorn in the high jump. Shelhorn finished fourth overall with a jump of 5 feet. Teammate Emily Miglin just missed qualifying, finishing fifth in the discus with a toss of 96 feet. Abby Sahr finished 12th in the discus (82 feet, 3 inches), and Meredia Brooks was 10th in the shot put (27-feet-9 1/2).
In the long jump, Mount Vernon took seventh and ninth overall. Macie Malone jumped 14-feet-4, while Katie Merrilees finished with a jump of 14-feet-3. Madi Phillips was seventh overall in the pole vault, clearing 7-feet-6.
The running preliminaries will be held today, starting at 4 p.m.
In Division III boys field events at Gahanna-Lincoln High School, Fredericktown’s Jon Gallagher was the lone qualifier, winning the high jump. Gallagher cleared 6 feet to win. Teammate Nathan Cubbage finished fifth with a jump of 5-feet-10. Centerburg’s Thomas Schuster finished seventh overall in the discus with a toss of 123-feet-1, and teammate Dillon Eppich tied for ninth in the high jump, clearing 5-feet-6. Danville’s Weston Severns finished fifth in the long jump, jumping 19-feet-11 1/4.
The boys running preliminaries will be held today, starting at 4 p.m.
Results from the Division II meet at Groveport-Madison High School were not available at press time. Full results will be printed in a later edition of the News.
