HOWARD — Kirk Construction had two tries coming, but the team got it right the first time. After winning its way through the winner’s bracket, Kirk Construction defeated the consolation-bracket winner, Fast Freddies, 4-3, to win the Kokosing Valley 12 & Under Softball League Championship at Fawcett Field on Saturday.
“They worked hard in practice,” said Bud Kirk, whose daughter, Kaylee Kirk, was the winning pitcher. “They left their attitudes out of it. They came to work hard. There was no complaining, there was no second-guessing. It’s a group of girls who worked as hard as they possibly could and all the credit goes out to them.”
Along with solid pitching, heads-up base running was the key for Kirk Construction, which got a run in the second inning and three more in the third.
“The girls work hard at their batting,” said coach Kirk. “That was one of the things we pushed this year was making sure we were really good at batting. My belief is that, when you bat like that, you execute and field the ball better because your confidence goes up.”
