MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Minor League Tournament Championship took on a definite Fredericktown flavor, Sunday afternoon, at Phillips Park.
Mike’s Fredericktown Marathon successfully capped off its undefeated season with a 16-0 defeat of Yarman Roofing, another Fredericktown team. Mike’s Marathon finished 23-0.
It was quite a turnaround for a team that won just two games the year before. Mike’s outscored its opponents, 267-77, on the season.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the kids,” said Mike’s Marathon coach Lucas Sheriff. “The core group was here, the infield, were 9-year-olds last year, and we went 2-16. We never really got blown out of games, and we kept telling them to stay in it and we’ll come back next year and be tough. Did I know that we would be this tough? No, I’d be a liar if I said I did, but I couldn’t be more proud of the kids and what they accomplished. We’ve had several one-run wins this year. They never give up; they are full of heart.”
