  • Whirlwind goals lead Newark past Yellow Jackets

MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Lady Yellow Jackets soccer team got hit by a whirlwind.
Up 1-0 in the second half, they could only watch as their lead evaporated. Then, before they could catch their breath, Newark had built up an insurmountable lead.
When the dust settled, the scoreboard read 5-1. The defeat for Mount Vernon was as sudden as it was complete.
“I don’t know what happened,” Mount Vernon head coach Vit Streska said. “They just beat us.”
It didn’t start out that way. The Yellow Jackets came out firing in the first half, working like a single unit and playing keep-away from the Newark players. Chelsea Boutin scored in the 18th minute to put Mount Vernon up 1-0.
It was their fifth show on goal. They would only have one more the entire match.
“When you don’t get shots, you don’t win. It’s that simple,” Streska explained.
Newark didn’t even attempt a shot until the final minute of the first half. But, like a pool hall hustler toying with his opponent, the Wildcats came alive in the second half.
