MOUNT VERNON — What looked
so promising, turned sour in a hurry on the Mount Vernon girls soccer team Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets twice held one-goal leads in the first half, but watched as
Mansfield St. Peter’s scored three times in the second half to post a 4-2
victory at Yellow Jacket Stadium.
Mount Vernon (3-7-1) got on the board first when Ruthann Bandy headed in a free
kick from Kate Israel at the 16:53 mark of the first half. Israel booted the
ball from about 40 yards out, it hit the ground and bounced up where Bandy used
her head to knock it over St. Pete goalie Rachel Kleman.
The Jackets were in control of the ball and the game when the Mansfield St. Peter’s
coach received a yellow card for a boisterous disagreement with the officials.
That seemed to fire up his Spartans, who scored less than 30 seconds later when
Sarah Schuerer booted a free kick from about 35 yards out that slipped through
the hands of Mount Vernon goalie Kenzie Crawford.
Mount Vernon retook the lead with two minutes left in the first half when Chelsie
Boutin slipped through the defense and scored off a throw-in from Abbey Smith.
The Jackets had a couple of opportunities to extend the lead, but Kleman made
a couple of nice saves.
