HOWARD — The snake bit the Mount Vernon golf team one more time.
Tuesday, the Yellow Jackets finished fourth in the Division I district tournament for the fourth straight year. Mount Vernon finished with a team total of 308, just three shots out of placing for the state tournament. The top three teams advance to the state tournament. St. Charles won the event at Apple Valley Golf Course with a score of 300. Dublin Coffman was second at 301 and Dublin Jerome third at 305.
“We still can’t get over the hump,” said Mount Vernon coach Mike Fuller. “I’m proud of the kids, though. They played well.
“When we started the year, our first four tournaments we shot 330, 330, 331, 327. We’ve come a long way since then. We’ve improved gradually throughout the year and we’re peaking at the right time.”
The Jackets started out on the back nine at Apple Valley and led by two strokes after scores were posted at the turn. But, things turned sour on the final two holes as Mount Vernon was denied a trip to the state tournament again. The five players were a combined 16 over par on the final two tough holes at Apple Valley.
