MOUNT VERNON –– Matt Smith is the new head coach of Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets baseball, the school announced.
Smith, a former defensive assistant coach for the Mount Vernon football team, has spent the past five years as head coach for Fredericktown baseball. During that time, he retained a teaching position at Mount Vernon.
Smith says this is a natural transition for him and for the team.
“This is a tremendous opportunity. I’m glad to be back at Mount Vernon, and I’m looking forward to working with these kids,” Smith said.
“Mount Vernon has a tremendous history, a great tradition with baseball. I’m glad to continue to be a part of it,” Smith added.
Smith took over a Fredericktown team with a losing record and turned them around right away. He was named Central District Coach of the Year for Division III following the 2010 season.
