MOUNT VERNON — The unofficial start to the high school wrestling season took place on Saturday with the annual Mount Vernon area wrestling preview.
Centerburg, East Knox, Fredericktown, Northridge and Utica, along with Cardington, joined the Yellow Jackets in competition. Wrestlers are matched up, according to their talent and experience, to compete in three, one-minute exhibition rounds.
“It works out nice to showcase the kids,” said Mount Vernon wrestling coach John Brown. “It gets the crowd together and lets everybody see what is in the area.
“The kids get a good match and dust off some of the rust. It’s just a nice little opener,” Brown continued.
The exhibition, which has been held at Pleasant Street Elementary School for seven years, has played a part in promoting wrestling in the whole of Knox County.
“I think it helps,” said Brown. “I think it lets the kids see who the tough kids are and get an idea of what they need to do to be there. I think it’s a nice little snapshot for anyone, who wants to get an idea of where they want to be.
