MOUNT VERNON — She’s only a sophomore, but every time Centerburg’s Tristen Simpson stepped on to the volleyball court, she dictated the match.

That’s why the sports writers and editors of the Mount Vernon News have named Simpson the volleyball All-Area Player of the Year.

Simpson led the area in kills and blocks. At 6-foot-1, her tall frame helped her dominate at the net in virtually every match, leading her team to a perfect 14-0 record in the Mid-Buckeye Conference and prompting opposing coaches to “play away from her.”

Joining her on the News All-Area team is teammate Celeste Tucker. The Centerburg senior was among the area leaders in assists.

Also named to the All-Area team was Mount Vernon’s Kate Reynolds who, as well as playing well all over the court, was dangerous as a server.

East Knox’s Allison Henthorn, Danville’s Morgan Lauderbaugh, Fredericktown’s Lyndsay Briegel and Highland’s Samantha Zuber round out the list.

Mount Vernon’s Alex Miglin, East Knox’s Lindsey VanHoose, Fredericktown’s Hayley Derikito and Centerburg’s Macy Michel and Stacy Fielding were named All-Area Honorable Mention.

Centerburg’s Ami Stevens, for fostering a total team mentality and an overall positive atmosphere among her players, was named All-Area volleyball Coach of the Year.
