Trojans get battle; beat Spartans in 5
CENTERBURG — Continuing to fight back when it’s down is a talent the Centerburg High School girls volleyball team proved it had on Saturday. The Trojans stayed home to defeat Marion Pleasant in five games.
The Trojans won the first game, 25-22, but fell behind two games to one, 11-25, 10-25, before winning the match with scores of 25-21 and 25-17.
The Centerburg victory gave Pleasant its first loss of the year, dropping Pleasant to 17-1. Prior to Saturday’s contest, Pleasant was ranked fourth in the state for Division III, while the Trojans were ranked eighth. Centerburg’s record is now 14-1.
“This was the best the team had played all year,” said Centerburg coach Lisa Boron. “They worked as a team on the floor and worked hard to not let the ball hit the floor. It was an outstanding defensive job by the girls with all-around good passing. The team is improving every time we take the floor.”
The Trojans had superior serve reception, passing 93 percent of their balls succcessfully.
Jenna Ross led the defense with 32 digs, while Laura Mackley had 23 digs, 20 kills and nine blocks for the day. Alisha Stevens had 16 digs and 23 kills. Amber Salley had eight kills and five blocks, and Shelly Milburn added 10 digs. Bethany Miles had four kills and 10 digs. Carly Szlagyi had seven digs, and Camaranne Myles had 52 assists with 20 digs.
The Trojans’ junior varsity team also picked up a win Saturday, taking out Pleasant in just two games with scores of 25-21 and 25-15.
Centerburg will play again Tuesday, in a home game against the visiting Loudonville Redbirds.
