Jackets fall to Jerome
MOUNT VERNON — Losses are never welcomed, especially when they come during a home match. The Mount Vernon High School girls volleyball team was dealt such a loss on Thursday, as the squad fell in a three-game match to Dublin Jerome, 25-9, 25-20, 25-21.
“It is just disappointing that we can’t clean up our game and stop making mistakes,” said Mount Vernon’s head coach, Shae Baxter. “We are a good team; we just beat ourselves every time.”
The Jackets just couldn’t get started in the first game against Jerome, as they fell to a quick 13-4 disadvantage. After a long scoring run by Jerome, Mount Vernon couldn’t answer as it fell in the first game by 16 points. The second game saw the Jackets down by as much as 10 points at one point, but thanks to a late-game rally, they were able to narrow Dublin Jerome’s lead to five. Mount Vernon still lost, however, by a score of 25-20.
The third game seemed to be Mount Vernon’s for the taking right from the beginning. The Jackets got started with an 8-4 advantage, soon making it a 14-5 advantage. The Mount Vernon lead gradually dwindled, however, as Jerome tied the game at 21. Four points later, the Celtics won the game, and effectively the match, with a score of 25-21.
Caroline Denzer collected 29 digs for Mount Vernon. Ashley Carhart added six kills for the Yellow Jackets.
