CENTERBURG — After a fast start,
the Centerburg Trojans (5-6, 5-1 MBC) were good when they needed to be on Saturday
night as they took down the visiting Johnstown Johnnies, 59-43, in Mid-Buckeye
Conference girls basketball action.
Claire Harvey had a big night for the Trojans to lead all scorers with 24 points.
She hit a trio of 3-pointers and was stellar from the foul line.
“I could tell in the first quarter that Claire was focused and ready to
play,” said Centerburg coach Todd Nauman. “She came out, found the
shot and she hit a couple of threes to start with. Looking across the board,
she had at least three points in every quarter. She was very consistent all night
long, which is what I’m looking for. She was able to get to the line more
than anyone else and shot nine out of 10. You can’t ask for much better
than that.”
It was the work on the defensive side of the ball that gave the Trojans a leg
up early in the game. The Trojans beat the Johnnies under the boards, outrebounding
them 34-28 for the game. Mackenzie Stoyle led the Trojans grabbing four of their
14 steals and nailing two of their four blocks.
Meanwhile, a Breanna Campbell bucket staked the Trojans to a 17-5 advantage in
the closing minute of the first quarter.
Carly Compton and Tristen Simpson (10 rebounds, four points) both added a jumper
to extend Centerburg’s lead to 15 points, 24-9, midway through the second
quarter.
“Coming off our East Knox win with Mackenzie scoring 33, we just thought
that we needed to keep it up and keep working hard,” said Harvey. “We
just hit the open shots that we had.”
