CENTERBURG — State tournaments are nothing new to Centerburg High School’s Amelia Holt.

When she went to the State Cross Country Tournament with her team in 2009, she had plenty of company. This time, however, she will be the sole athlete to represent the area at the 2011 OHSAA State Gymnastics Tournament, which will be held at Hilliard Bradley High School this weekend.

Holt, a vaulter, will compete Saturday in the individual competition.

“It’s really hard competition,” explained Holt. “It’s a lot of pressure.”

As a runner, Holt has seen her share of success with her sister, Victoria, and her friends. They will be supporting her on Saturday as well, but when she vaults, she will vault alone.

“You’re an individual, and it’s all about you,” said Holt. “You can’t rely on your teammates. It’s an individual sport.”

She will speed down the runway, take off, hit the vault, fly through the air and land in a matter of seconds.

“You kind of want to think about attacking the vault,” said Holt. “You go all-out in full force.”
