DAYTON — Mount Vernon resident Eileen Thibaut had a front row seat to watch her granddaughter win the first-place gold medal at the Winter Guard International championships in Dayton last weekend.

Sarah McBride is a member of the 12-person varsity winter guard at Oak Ridge High School in Conroe, Texas. Oak Ridge claimed first place over 40 teams from across the United States in the finals of the scholastic open competing class.

Winter guard is an indoor sport in which teams perform to taped music while dancing on a floor mat the size of a basketball court. While dancing, guard members spin flags and toss rifles and sabres.

“We couldn’t be more proud of her,” said Thibaut. “I felt very privileged to be there.”
