MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Yellow Jacket girls track team can’t catch a break from the weather.
The team began the track events — the team’s strongest attribute — just as the rain began to fall on Mount Vernon High School for the Yellow Jacket Relays on Saturday.
Overall, the Jackets finished third in Division I, behind Ashland and Wooster — two teams they couldn’t catch all day.
“The three of us kept finishing in the top three,” Mount Vernon girls track coach Pat Gray said. “As a result, we just couldn’t get over the hump.”
The Jackets relied on the strength of their anchors in the distance relay events. Celia Leonard anchored the distance medley team that finished second. And Zoe Leonard anchored a team consisting of Alexis Mazza, Kathy Bell and Katie Curry that won the 1,600-meter sprint medley.
“Our anchors helped us tremendously,” Gray said. “Celia Leonard, Noella Nzishura and Curry helped us in each race they were in. They probably singlehandedly moved us up a couple spots in each race. Those seniors have been around the block a few times.”
