MOUNT VERNON — It all came down to a photo finish.

Fredericktown’s Garrett Gatton and Mount Vernon’s Leevi Stump were in a tight battle for Most Valuable Competitor at Friday’s Mount Vernon News SpecTRACKular coming in to the final race. Both competitors were on their team’s 4x400-meter relay team and the winner would be decided in the final race.

The Freddies got a strong kick from anchor Nathan Cubbage and it ended up propelling his teammate Gatton to the MVC honors. The Freddies’ relay team won the event in 3:38.45, while the Jackets were edged out at the tape, finishing third to Clear Fork by 0.02 seconds.

That gave Gatton 30 points for the night as he barely edged out Stump, who finished with 29. East Knox’s Dakota Anderson and Jordan Coffman finished third and fourth, respectively, with 22 and 21 points.

“God gave me the energy to run all night. And he gave the team unity to finish the race strong,” Gatton said. “There’s nothing better than this, but I can’t do it without the support of the others on the team.”
