CENTERBURG — For the first time since 1986, Centerburg has a new boys basketball coach.

The school board officially approved John Marhefka to take over the program that had been led for years by Jim Simpson.

Marhefka comes to Centerburg from Geneva High School in northeast Ohio, where he has coached the Eagles since 2007. Last year, the Eagles finished 3-18.

Marhefka brings college experience to the Trojans’ home floor. He was head basketball coach at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Ga., for one year before taking the reigns at Slippery Rock (Pa.) in 2002, a job he held until ’06.

In 25 seasons, Simpson won 311 games at Centerburg, leading the Trojans to five district titles and six league championships.

Last year, Centerburg lost in the district semifinals to Africentric.
