MOUNT VERNON — After some recent performances that were a bit short of expectation, the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets softball team needed a catalyst to get the 2011 sectional tournament off on the right foot.

Hello, Walnut Ridge.

The Jackets rattled off 10 hits, scored 17 times and played nearly flawless defense as they prevailed, 17-1, at home in Tuesday’s sectional semifinal.

It wasn’t a blowout from the beginning, however.

In the middle of the third, Mount Vernon came off the field leading, 3-1. Head coach Carisa Lanning called her players together in a huddle, stood on a bench and addressed them.
