DAYTON — It was a day the East Knox boys track team would like to forget.

The 4x800-meter relay team — a team which has shattered school records and was poised for a regional title — was disqualified from its race at the regional tournament on Thursday.

The Bulldogs, who initially finished second, had their place taken away when officials determined that one of the runners stepped on the line during the race.

“I feel terrible for these kids,” East Knox track coach Jason Ewalt said. “They’ve worked so hard all season. To have it taken away from them like this, it’s awful.”

It happened during the second leg of the event. East Knox’s Dakota Anderson had the lead when Dayton Dunbar’s Davion Johnson came up from the outside. As Johnson attempted to pass, he bumped Anderson. No one believed it was intentional, but the bump forced Anderson to lose his balance and step over the line.

East Knox initially finished second, about 1 1/2 seconds behind Brookville. Dayton Dunbar finished fifth.
