MOUNT VERNON — It was a season that saw the team grow together.
At the beginning of the 2011 spring season, there were questions about the Mount Vernon High School track team. How far would it get? How would it make up for the loss of talent from last year? Can it grow as a team?
By the end of the year, the team saw one member make it to state, several others qualify for regionals, and personal goals and personal records get established.
The track team honored its best at a banquet on Tuesday at Mount Vernon High School. Every award carried a special message with it.
Girls head coach Pat Gray gave out the girls’ awards. Most Valuable Sprinter went to Katie Curry, who qualified for the district finals in the 300-meter hurdles, an event she won at the Mount Vernon News SpecTRACKular. Most Valuable Field Athlete went to Jessica Roden, whose final season with the team ended at the state tournament, where she finished 13th in the high jump. Sarah Fowler received Most Valuable Distance Runner; she missed qualifying for regionals in the 3,200-meter run by less than three seconds.
