FREDERICKTOWN — In the past quarter-century, Marilyn Rutherford has become synonymous with Fredericktown Freddies’ volleyball. Her intention to step down as head varsity coach, which becomes official this week, brings forth a well of memories.

Letting go of something that has been part of your life for so many years is difficult. Rutherford, however, will continue in her other capacities as a physical education and health instructor at Fredericktown.

“When I was talking to (outgoing Fredericktown Athletic Director) Kirk (Manns) about this, I told him that you just know when it’s time — especially for the age-level that you’re working with as head coach,” said Rutherford, who came to Fredericktown in 1986 as a junior high school coach. “I just think it was a good time and, hopefully, people will feel that I left the program in pretty good shape. I just feel that there needs to be some new blood in there to move it up to the next level.”
