MOUNT VERNON — As he adjusted the seat on his 1993 Cannondale bicycle, someone asked James “Spudd” Sasak why he doesn’t cash in on a new bike with all the new frills.

“I don’t need a bike with a lot of features,” Sasak responded. “I do it for the ride.”

Then he put his arm around a Special Olympian and said, “Actually, I do it for them.”

A bicycle ambassador for Special Olympics Ohio, Sasak has been riding to every county seat in the state to promote the upcoming Games, to be held this weekend in Columbus. Wednesday’s appearance at the steps of the Knox County Courthouse, where nearly two dozen athletes and volunteers had gathered, was his 86th stop, with just two more to go.
