MOUNT VERNON — It took an inning to get the bats going in Game 1 on Saturday, but once the Mount Vernon 12-year-old All-Stars did, they rolled to a 17-2 victory over Cambridge in the opening game of the District 5 Little League Tournament at Phillips Park.

Mount Vernon was able to score four runs in the first inning without the benefit of a hit, thanks to a patient offense that had three walks and two batters hit by a pitch.

“We got four runs in the first without getting a hit. That was big,” said Mount Vernon manager Dan Trace. “Then, our bats started coming along.”
