MOUNT VERNON — After a few scary close calls, the Mount Vernon 12-year-old All-Stars can finally call themselves district champs.

Mount Vernon defeated Guernsey County, 8-3, in the final game of a championship doubleheader on Sunday.

The win puts Mount Vernon in the Little League state tournament, which begins Saturday at 1 p.m. at Centennial Park in Englewood.

Guernsey had come off its momentum from a late rally in Game 1 to score three quick runs in the top of the first in Game 2. Ben Davis smacked a two-run home run over straightaway right, which was immediately followed by a solo homer by Justin Cork to the same spot.
