HOWARD — Just ten pins away.

Susan and Dennis Combs, a newlywed couple from Howard, came that close to winning the classified doubles division at the USGA Open in Reno, Nev.

They actually led for a while. They took the top spot after a round of play in March. By the time they got set to bowl in the final weekend in early July, they had lost the top spot.

This was only Dennis’ second trip to the USBC Open. Susan had been there several times before. This year’s Open took place at a national bowling stadium in Reno, Nev.

“I’m comfortable with it. It doesn’t matter if there are a thousand lanes,” said Susan. “But to bowl on that kind of a stage, it can be intimidating the first time.”

Susan, a radiology specialist at Knox Community Hospital, doesn’t know how much money she has earned while bowling but knows it’s “thousands.” Dennis, who works ar Rolls Royce, stopped competitive bowling after college.

The Combs met at a Tuesday night bowling league. They were married in April 2010.
