MOUNT VERNON — High school golf gets started in a big way this week in Knox County.
The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets have their first official event of the season when they host the Mount Vernon Country Club Classic today. The tournament traditionally has the Jackets taking on some of the top teams in the state. Last year, Centerville took the top spot, with St. Xavier and St. Charles following close behind.
There will be no rest for Mount Vernon, as the golf team travels to New Albany for a matchup on Tuesday. The Jackets then take part in an Ohio Capital Conference meet at Players’ Club on Wednesday, followed by a meet at Westerville Central on Thursday.
The Mid-Buckeye Conference kicks off this week as well. East Knox will host Centerburg today starting at noon, followed by the always competitive East Knox Invitational on Tuesday. That tournament features the Bulldogs hosting Centerburg and Utica in a nonconference matchup. Centerburg will then be among the teams taking part in the Utica Invitational on Wednesday.
Danville travels to Chapel Hill to take part in the Jaquer Invitational today. The Blue Devils meet one-on-one against North Union on Tuesday.
The MBC has its first official meet on Thursday at Apple Valley, with the first tee time at 1 p.m.
The Centerburg girls team, which actually started its season on Friday with a narrow defeat at the hands of Jonathan Alder, will play today at the Early Bird Invitational in Minerva. The Trojans then host Lakewood and Logan Elm on Wednesday.
