MOUNT VERNON — Matt O’Hara had a strong start and finished with an 80 to lead a quintet of Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets to a 15th-place finish at the Mount Vernon Country Club Classic on Monday.
The tournament, which kicked off the high school golf season with a bang, drew some of the top competition from around the state. Upper Arlington led all teams with a total score of 296.
Everyone had to deal with changing course conditions as the wet surface from Sunday’s rains dried off with the afternoon sun.
“Toward the end of the day, the greens started to get a little harder,” said O’Hara, who finished 11 shots behind Dublin Jerome’s Chad Merzbacher (68). “The ball started to bounce past the hole. You don’t want to be behind the pin because you can putt them off the green on half the holes.”
