HOWARD — The East Knox Bulldogs soccer team pounded away through most of the game, finally breaking through in the second half against the Licking Valley Panthers to win its season opener, 4-3, on a Cory Rettig goal at 33 minutes of the second half.
“We had the ball in their end 75 percent of the time (in the first half),” said East Knox coach Geoff Green. “We seemed to be doing the right things but could not get the ball in the back of the net. We had opportunities, but we just couldn’t finish.”
The Bulldogs, who had 30 shots, kept the ball in the Panthers’ zone most of the first half. Panthers’ goalkeeper Shane Richards held off the Bulldogs, while his teammates put together a couple of fast breaks, allowing Drake McArtor to score twice and give the Panthers a 2-0 lead at halftime. The Panthers would only get six shots on goal for the game.
