MOUNT VERNON — It took about 15 minutes for the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets girls soccer team to click. Then, like a sleeping giant, the Jackets awoke and began their rout.

Mount Vernon scored seven goals in the space of about 20 minutes of play en route to an 8-2 drubbing of Marion Harding at home on Wednesday.

The Jackets (2-0) had a large roster to choose from. With no junior varsity game, everyone was available. Mount Vernon head coach Vit Streska took advantage of that by making frequent substitutions.

“In the first few minutes, I subbed a lot,” said Streska. “I gave a lot of girls a chance to play. I put in a lot of different groups to see who would work together. Eventually, they got more aggressive.”

The strategy kept the players on their toes. The Jackets started off slow, almost lackadaisical in their offensive attack. The team, at first, didn’t appear to be on the same page. As subs kept coming in, the players on the field adapted well and, according to Streska, that’s when it started going right.

“They started working hard,” said Streska. “They figured out that they have to pass the ball and work together. Once they saw different players, they started talking more and going for the ball more. They were working together as a team.”
