MOUNT VERNON — The fast and furious world of roller derby may soon be coming to a rink near you.
That is, if Kali Sponseller has her way.
The local business owner has 21 women on her roster who are currently practicing locally or honing their skills at roller derby clinics.
For those who remember when roller derby meant banked, oval tracks and breakaway penalty boxes, flat track roller derby is a different experience.
“They still have that type of roller derby, but it’s not that popular anymore.” said Sponseller. “It’s really expensive to build (a banked track) like that or find a place for it. Usually, you have to build your own track and you have to find somewhere to store it. With the flat track, it’s a lot easier to put a team together or find places to play and practice.”
There are rules governing the sport to keep it from turning into a brawl on wheels, as the televised version so often did a generation ago.
