MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets girls volleyball team is out to prove that hard work pays off.
The Jackets dominated in their home opener on Thursday, crushing rival Delaware Hayes in straight sets, 25-13, 25-13, 25-8.
To anyone who saw the way the team ended last season, this was a refreshing change of pace.
“We prepared hard over the summer, and that really helped them learn how to play as a team,” said Mount Vernon head coach Erica Feick. “In turn, they learned where each player is going to play, who’s going to pick up which ball. They really put in the time in the offseason, and it’s showing.”
The Pacers kept it tight at first, trading point for point until Mount Vernon held a slim 14-13 lead in the first set.
Then Kate Reynolds took over.
Reynolds helped the Jackets win the final 11 points to take Game 1. Her serves were perfectly spotted, darting right around certain players to force mistakes. Reynolds later began Game 3 with three straight aces. The stat sheet showed Reynolds had four aces in the match, but her serves were so hard to return that she could have been credited with more.
