MOUNT VERNON — The hard work paid off for the Mount Vernon volleyball team.
The Yellow Jackets had been struggling with their serve reception, so the team’s last two practices focused solely on that part of the game. Tuesday, it paid dividends as the Jackets whipped visiting Watkins Memorial, 25-10, 25-17, 25-14, in Ohio Capital Conference action.
“Last week, we struggled with our serve receives. That’s why we lost,” said Mount Vernon coach Erica Feick. “So, in practice, all we did was serve receive. We’re still not perfect. We’ve got a long way to go. But, we recognized that as a weakness and tried to focus on it. It paid off tonight.”
The Jackets (4-2) got off to their customarily slow start Tuesday, as Watkins (2-8) scored six of the first eight points. But, MV figured out what was wrong, got the ship righted, and went on a 10-point run to take control.
