MOUNT VERNON — Growing pains.
The Mount Vernon High School girls soccer team has endured their share.
Tuesday’s 10-0 dismantling at the hands of a clearly superior Hilliard Bradley squad (5-1-2, 2-1 OCC) will stand out for some time as one of the low points of the year.
With their regular goalkeeper, Jess Wellman, still out with an injury, few expected the Yellow Jackets and their thin bench to take down a well-seasoned Bradley team.
“Those girls have been playing for 10 to 15 years, since they were 5 years old,” said Mount Vernon coach Vit Streska of the visiting Hilliard Bradley team. “They are in soccer all year around soccer camps, indoor soccer, spring soccer, summer soccer and they play together a lot, too.
“Heart-wise, we were there,” Streska continued. “We were intimidated by the bigger school. Especially, our first year players. The difference is how fast you learn from mistakes.”
