JOHNSTOWN — With only two players back from last year’s Mid-Buckeye Conference champion, the Centerburg golf team wasn’t expected to be in the hunt for the league title.
Chalk one up for the young guys.
The Trojans got some big play Tuesday from their underclassmen and finished as co-champs of the MBC with Johnstown.
“Anytime you win the MBC, it’s a great thing,” said Centerburg coach Nate Altizer. “The young guys played well today. This is a great reward for them. We’re a young team and for us to win was definitely a bonus.”
Tuesday, the Trojans finished third in the second leg of the MBC tournament at The Links at Echo Springs with a team score of 349. Northridge had the best round of the day at 337, followed by Johnstown at 340. Utica was fourth at 365, followed by Danville (369), Loudonville (380) and East Knox (395). Centerburg came into Tuesday’s tourney with a one-point lead on Johnstown.
After struggling on the front nine, the Trojans turned it on on the back. They were able to cut 14 strokes off their score to sneak back into third place.
“The guys really stepped it up after the turn, especially the young guys,” Altizer said.
