MOUNT VERNON — When it comes to rivals, Mount Vernon’s biggest comes from Delaware.

Teams tend to play up to rivals. Players run faster, hit harder and are more intense. Coaches provide a little extra instruction. The crowd is louder. Even the cheerleaders take on an extra bit of spunk.

A new chapter in the Mount Vernon/Hayes rivalry will be written on Friday, when the two teams meet at Yellow Jacket Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

There’s something on the line for both teams. For Hayes, it’s a chance to remain unbeaten in the Ohio Capital Conference and sneak into title contention. For Mount Vernon, it’s a chance to get its first win for a new coach over a bitter rival before a packed house at home.

Mount Vernon High School has taken the rivalry to a new level this week. On Wednesday, all students were asked to wear white. Today, it’s all black. Friday, they’ll come to school wearing orange and black.
