MOUNT VERNON — The monkey is off the back of the Mount Vernon Yellow Jacket football team.
More like a gorilla.
The Yellow Jackets won their first game in the Anthony Naples era with a 22-0 victory on Friday over Ohio Captial Conference foe Franklin Heights on the muddy quagmire at Yellow Jacket Stadium.
It was the Jackets’ first shutout in nearly eight years. The last shutout came on Oct. 3, 2003, when Mount Vernon beat Watkins Memorial, 6-0.
So far this season, Mount Vernon (1-5, 1-2 OCC) has lived on the big play to stay in games. This time, there were few big plays — the Jackets ground it out against their smaller opponents to metriculate the ball down the field.
