MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets faced the No. 3 team in the state on Thursday. It showed on the scoreboard as the Jackets gave up three quick goals on their way to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Big Walnut Golden Eagles at Yellow Jacket stadium.

Big Walnut (10-0-3) got on the board quickly as Josh Annis dribbled a shot into the net. A few minutes later, Corey Gibson took a centering pass and knocked it in.

Later in the first half, an own goal off a Big Walnut corner kick made the score 3-0.

Mount Vernon finally scored in the second half, when Travis Kiger took a Seth Badger pass and shot it past keeper Lukas Swysgood.

“Two of those goals, we didn’t defend well, and they took advantage of each opportunity,” said Mount Vernon head coach Scott Dapprich. “That’s something we’ve got to keep working with.”

Corey Kester, one of the emerging team leaders, missed Thursday’s match with a knee injury. As a result, the Jackets had to switch to new formations that they weren’t used to.

“I threw something at them that they had never done,” said Dapprich. “As a coach, you have to see if your kids can adjust and move.”

The Jackets travel to Tri-Valley on Saturday.
