MOUNT VERNON — It was Senior Night for the Mount Vernon Yellow Jacket girls soccer team on Thursday. But there was little to celebrate when the final whistle blew.
Buckeye Valley spoiled the party by beating Mount Vernon, 2-0, in a sudden burst of offense that ended as quickly as it started.
The Yellow Jackets held the Barons in check through most of the match. However, the 61st minute spelled doom for Mount Vernon, as the team allowed two goals over a span of about 35 seconds.
“I don’t know what happened,” Mount Vernon head coach Vit Streska said after the match. “We were doing so well, and then ... what happened?”
That might be a question that everyone on the team was asking midway through the second half. Buckeye Valley’s Taylor Hyatt took a centering pass and found the corner of the goal wide open.
Then, just seconds later, Hyatt took another shot which Mount Vernon goalkeeper Hadleigh Rundell stopped with an outstretched dive. However, the ball rolled away from her, and Alyssa Spencer was able to slide the ball into the net before any defenders could stop her.
“We got ourselves down as soon as they kicked those goals,” said senior Brit Neal. “Some of us just kind of gave up. But, we played as a team tonight.”
